Triple Arthrodesis

The Donjoy SP walker is a favorite rehabilitation product of Mr Adam Budgen, Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedics in York, UK. He has a special interest in foot and ankle surgery. He is a Consultant in Orthopaedics and Trauma at the Nuffield Hospital Leeds.

We asked Mr Budgen about his research on triple arthrodesis and why he prescribed this brace in particular. He told OrthopaedicsandTrauma.com: "When I was a surgical fellow in Brisbane I looked at the avoidance of bone graft in the triple arthrodesis operation for ankle arthritis. We were pleased to discover that the rate of success for the operation without bone graft was high. Normally the bone graft is taken from the iliac crest of the hip. This has a high morbidity with the graft site often being more painful than the operation site. Our study has shown that comparable rates of union are achieved without the need for supplementary bone graft from the iliac crest or other donor sites.

He said: "A good post operative brace can be very important in encouraging mobilisation after the period of initial immobilisation. The brace must balance comfort and ease of use with sufficient protection from excessive ealy movement. Often plaster casts can be too restrictive and uncomfortable, but in my opinion the SP Walker™ is an excellent brace for this complex but rewarding operation".
